Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, so now’s the time to start planning if you’re buying flowers for a significant other.
There’s no shortage of ways to buy flowers. If you pay with a rewards credit card, you’ll earn rewards on your purchase regardless of how you order them. But, when you purchase flowers online, you can usually snag extra rewards or savings by clicking through an online shopping portal and utilizing credit card merchant offers.
You might want to order from a local florist for various reasons. For one, it’s a great way to support a small business. Plus, you’ll generally get more control over the final product. But you may leave rewards on the table if you don’t order your flowers online.
So, if you want to order your flowers online, here’s what you need to know.
How and why to use online shopping portals
If you start at an online shopping portal instead of going directly to the merchant’s website, you can earn bonus cash back, points or miles. Using an online shopping portal is easy and doesn’t take much time. Generally, you must register with the portal and click through to your desired retailer before purchasing.
If you know which retailer you want to use for your flower order, you can use a shopping portal aggregator to find out which portal offers the largest return on your purchase. For example, you can use a site like Cashback Monitor to see which portal provides the best return on purchases with Teleflora Flowers:

However, if you want to earn a specific type of reward, you may prefer to go directly to the portal of your choice. You can also install shopping portal browser extensions to remind you to use portals when shopping online.

Vendors available through popular portals
Most online shopping portals feature multiple flower retailers offering bonuses. These bonuses often increase before popular flower-sending holidays such as Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day.

Bonuses change frequently, so I won’t list specific bonuses here. Instead, I’ll list some of the most popular flower vendors supported by each online shopping portal.

Current credit card merchant offers
Another way to save money or earn extra rewards is credit card merchant offers, including Chase Offers, Amex Offers and Citi Merchant Offers. Here are some offers I found on my cards while writing this story.
- Amex Offers: 20% back on an eligible 1800flowers.com purchase, a $15 statement credit on an eligible Teleflora purchase of $15 or more (up to 10 times), a $25 statement credit on eligible SimplyBlooms purchases totaling $50 or more, and a $15 statement credit after eligible 1800flowers.com purchases totaling $55 or more (limit of four statement credits)
- Chase Offers: 10% back on a 1800flowers.com purchase ($12 cash back maximum) and 10% back on a The Bouqs purchase ($6 cash back maximum)
- Citi Merchant Offers: 15% back on up to three 1800flowers.com purchases of $50 or more ($10 cash back maximum)
Before deciding on a flower merchant, check your cards for offers. You may be able to stack an offer with shopping portal earnings and credit card rewards to boost the return you get on your purchase. However, you usually can’t stack Citi Merchant Offers with SimplyMiles offers.

Best cards for flowers
If you are using a credit card merchant offer, you’ll need to use the card the offer is tied to when purchasing. However, if you have multiple cards with the same offer or aren’t using a merchant offer, you should consider which card will offer the most value.

Flower purchases won’t fall into bonus categories on most rewards credit cards. In turn, you’ll usually earn the most rewards by purchasing your flowers with one of the best cards for everyday spending since these cards provide more than 1 point per dollar spent on all purchases.
However, you could also consider paying with a card for which you’re working toward minimum spending requirements for a welcome bonus. Or, if you’re working toward a spending threshold on one of your cards to earn elite status or other perks, that card could be a good choice.

Bottom line
Online shopping portals can be incredibly lucrative when purchasing products like flowers. And especially around holidays, it’s worth checking whether any credit card merchant offers are available on your credit cards if you don’t have a florist in mind.
